Blu is a MONSTER! I stumbled on Blu sometime last year and decided to check him out. Below the Heavens won Underground Album of the Year for a reason. I though El-P had it in the bag with I’ll Sleep When Your Dead, but when Blu & Exile hit, it’s all I could listen to.

I don’t know Blu’s whole background, but listening to his songs, his grandfather was a preacher, but his dad was a gang member. He says it in a song, “my pop a thug/ I’m a son of a blood/ with blue gators on”. Not to mention some of the other references like in Cold Hearted when he says his dad left a gun in the top drawer when he left.

I wouldn’t agree that all of his stuff is hot though. Blu & Exile was nutso, Blu & Mainframe are Johnson&Jonson is killer too, but C.R.A.C Knuckles was so-so. It just didn’t do it for me. If you haven’t heard Johnson&Jonson yet, it’s almost the same album as Powders & Oils, but without the freestyles, radio spots, and a few rough cuts. It’s still good as hell.

I’ll have to agree with the majority on the John McCain issue. I don’t think that in defending Barack Obama he was demeaning Arabs, but I do see how it could be taken that way. Even still, it should have never gotten to that point to where he needed to calm down his crowds. During the final debate, he basically ignored the whole thing and said that it was justified because Obama didn’t do X, Y, Z. Then there was some finger pointing, and something to the extent of, “I’m not too happy about some of the things your supporters are saying about me, or the shirts that are being made.” McCain pulled his own card on that one. He made himself look like a real punk.

I'll chill for now.

Thanks for the shout. Keep bringin' the heat, and I'll keep posting.

Joey G. here of www.dontbelievethehype.tv/The Beat Box Radio Show "fame."

Long-time listener, first time commenter.

Blu is my favorite emcee right now, period. I went down to Chicago two weeks ago to see him but my girl Drea, who's band is signed to Lupe's 1st & 15th, convinced me to go to her show instead (big mistake).

Whoop Rico is big down in ATL. I was there 3 weeks ago visiting my boy Maurice who's in Teach for America and his students were all over that shit. I introduced them to The Cool Kids and B.o.B. (who's from ATL but i guess not very big yet) and they were lovin it. Also got a picture with DJ Drama before I left, who came into the spot we had brunch at.

Noam, since you're the show's resident Jewish boy, I was wondering if you could inform the people about the signifance of the big wooden rooms that Jewish families put in their yards this time of year. I only ask because the Hasidic Jews that live in my neighborhood and have the wooden rooms won't talk to me because that's part of their religion (not talking to 'outsiders').

I appreciate the work ya'll cuz listening makes me feel less detached from MPLS since I moved back to Milwaukee.

I just had to add this. I'm watching Real Time with Bill Maher at the moment, and Franz, Ben Affleck just echoed exactly what you said about John McCain's statement at the rally when he said that Obama is not an Arab, but a good person.

That goes to show that if one person thinks something, it's guaranteed that someone else out there in the world is thinking the same thing.
